Android

Fer years scallywags have been askin' fer OnSong on Android and now, Arrr, it be a reality! Ye can install OnSong on yer Android 9.0 or newer device from th' Google Play Store.

Full Feature Parity

We were never content t' make an app that be watered down or less than our iOS/iPadOS flagship product so we be happy t' say that OnSong fer Android be th' full version. Ye can install it on yer Android devices from th' Google Play Store.

What's Different?

That be not t' say it be exactly th' same, savvy? In cases where there be an Apple-specific technology, we've come up with ways t' bring those features t' life in new ways that work with th' Android platform. Here be some ways that Android be different.

Add T' OnSong

Th' Add T' OnSong extension only works on iOS/iPadOS. However, Android's activity sheet system along with OnSong's Import From th' Web feature fills that gap nicely, matey.

Apple Music

Ye can still link backin' tracks from Apple Music and Spotify in OnSong fer Android as well as import tracks directly into yer OnSong library. Pragmatically ye'll see little differences. Ye'll need t' download th' Apple Music and/or Spotify app onto yer Android device and be required t' be connected t' th' Internet t' play th' tracks since those services only support streamin'. Th' interface fer pickin' songs uses our own design instead o' Apple and there be no way t' play those tracks through th' OnSong backin' track player since they be streamed.

Audio Subsystems

We be proud o' th' work we've done in supportin' all th' audio-related features such as metronome, backin' tracks, multitracks, pitch pipe, chord playback and more. Android supports all o' it! We have some more things cooked up fer ye fer 2027 and be pleased t' say... Android will do it all. Android devices be quite diverse and many do not support low-latency audio, but a few do. In addition, we cannot add gain above 100% in Android. This be just somethin' t' keep in mind if ye be usin' our upcomin' music production tools.

Document Scanin'

OnSong fer Android uses its own document scanner with an option t' install and use th' one available through Google Play Services. OnSong fer iOS/iPadOS uses th' built-in scanner. All th' same features and end result, but just a bit different, Blimey!

External Video

Some Android devices don't support wired video and only Apple devices support AirPlay. Because o' that, we've added support not only fer Google Cast, but other Smart TVs like th' Amazon Fire TV, Google TV, and smart TVs from Samsung and LG. Just download and install th' OnSong Display app on a compatible TV and stream yer lyrics or chords wirelessly, savvy?

Files

Apple products started out with no good file access fer app except somethin' called "file sharin'" which used a USB wired connection t' a host computer t' transfer files. That be just not available on Android but it makes no difference. Just use th' "Files" option t' import and export files located directly on yer Android device. All th' other options ye know and love in OnSong like Dropbox, Google Drive, and OnSong Drive be right there too.

Fonts

Apple products come with a lot o' popular and licensed fonts preinstalled like Helvetica, Georgia, Times New Roman, Courier, Verdana, and Marker Felt that OnSong has used fer years. Th' trouble be that those fonts be licensed and can't be used in th' cases where musicians need 'em. We've changed our fonts t' be class-based and substitute th' fonts fer ones that look similar but give their own character. Along th' way we've also let ye use custom fonts in OnSong too.

Live Video

If yer Android device has cameras, ye can use our live video backgrounds fer lyrics projection too, Arrr! In OnSong fer iOS/iPadOS, we used Apple's collection o' video filters t' apply effects which be not present on Android. However we were able t' recreate 92 o' th' 120+ effects which means ye'll likely not see a difference.

MIDI

Believe it or not, but we've brought th' full power o' our MIDI features t' Android includin' support fer Bluetooth MIDI and networked MIDI. Th' Bluetooth MIDI interface uses our own instead o' Apple and networked MIDI may work slightly differently but should be interoperable between platforms.

Sharin'

OnSong fer Android features th' same beam and stream sharin' features and works over OnSong Connect with devices on yer network. It does not work with point t' point WiFi like OnCue in iOS/iPadOS. OnSong defaults t' usin' OnSong Connect anyway. In addition, th' way emailin' and sharin' content works be different because it uses a different operatin' system. Fer instance, on iOS/iPadOS, th' OnSong® app uses th' system email composition t' send emails through th' Mail app.

Subscription Payment

If ye download from th' Google Play store or Amazon Appstore, ye can subscribe through those stores instead o' th' Apple App Store. Ye can also subscribe on th' web if ye like more control over how ye pay fer yer subscription. Group subscriptions be only available on th' web on all platforms.

Vertical Menubar

OnSong fer Android does not currently support vertical menubar mode.
